How to Use Honey for Blemishes

Acne is primarily caused by hormones and heredity. According to Greta Breedlove, author of "The Herbal Drug Store," honey can help clear acne blemishes and reduce redness and irritation. Tea tree oil is also an affective acne treatment: a 1990 study, published in "The Medical Journal of Australia," reports that tea tree oil is as effective as benzoyl peroxide, a common acne treatment. However, both tea tree oil and honey have the added benefit of being natural treatments.

Step 1

Mix the plain Greek yogurt, honey and lemon juice, along with the tea tree oil, together in a small dish. The mixture may be slightly runny.

Step 2

Wash your face with a mild facial cleanser. Rinse with warm water and blot dry. Avoid rubbing or vigorous scrubbing.

Step 3

Apply a layer of the yogurt/honey mixture to your face, though avoid getting the mixture in your eyes. Let the mixture set for 10 to 30 seconds, then apply another layer. Continue applying layers until you have applied all the mask.

Step 4

Let the mixture sit for 15 to 20 minutes, or until it dries completely. Rinse your face with warm water. Finish with cool water to tighten the pores.

Tips and Warnings

  • Apply the mask twice a week to clear acne. For a thicker mask, add 1 tbsp. of whole oats to the yogurt mix.
  • Pregnant and nursing women should avoid using tea tree oil. Tea tree oil may irritate some skin types. If you experience a rash or irritation, stop using the mask immediately. Always dilute essential oils with water or another substance. Do not apply these oils directly to the skin.
