The blood type diet is based on the concept that blood type -- either A, B, AB or O -- can determine the type of food and exercise choices a person should make. According to the Mayo Clinic, there is no sound scientific evidence that this diet is more effective than other diets for weight loss. However, supporters believe this diet can help with weight loss and disease prevention.

Poultry and Bacon

Individuals with type B blood are encouraged to avoid specific sources of protein. According to The Mayo Clinic, people with Type B blood should avoid chicken, bacon, ham and bacon. In addition, beef should be consumed in limited quantities. The Mayo Clinic recognizes that certain foods should be avoided because of lectins, protein-like substances found in many foods. Lectins interact with molecules containing sugar called antigens. Antigens help determine what substances in the body are harmful or helpful. If a harmful substance enters the body, antigens attack it and lead to an immune reaction that can protect the body from colds, flus, or diseases. This theory extends to foods, such as chicken, bacon and ham as they are treated as foreign substances in the body and therefore should not be eaten.

Shellfish

According to The Mayo Clinic, shellfish should be entirely avoided by people who have blood type B. The belief is that shellfish is treated as a foreign substance in the body and can lead to harmful inflammation or diseases. Shellfish may include marine animals that have shells, such as clams, lobster and shrimp.

Corn And Tomatoes

According to the Mayo Clinic, people with blood type B should also avoid certain vegetables and fruits. Specifically, corn and tomatoes should be avoided. These foods are believed to be treated as harmful substances in the body and may lead to symptoms such as flu, inflammation or even certain diseases. It is important to be aware of hidden sources of corn in the diet, such as in some breads and baked goods.
