Scabies is a skin condition that is caused by an infestation of the human itch mite (Sarcoptes scabiei var. hominis). Scabies affects people of all social backgrounds and races. Scabies may be treated with prescription medications known as scabicides. However, neem oil may be used to relieve the itching as well as the other symptoms associated with scabies.

Neem Oil

Neem oil originated in India and has been used for thousands of years by the Indian natives for its medicinal benefits. The leaves and the oil of the neem tree have been used for an array of health conditions. According to NeemFoundation.org, neem oil products are used as alternative treatments for skin infections, diabetes, cardiovascular disorders and cancer. In addition, neem may be used to treat acne, measles and chicken pox.

Causes

Scabies is caused by a skin mite that has infested humans for over 2,000 years. The microscopic mite has eight legs and a round body and burrows into the skin and may or may not be seen by the human eye. When burrowed into the skin, female mites may lay eggs, producing toxins that may cause an allergic reaction. Scabies is highly contagious and transmitted from skin-to-skin contact.

Symptoms

Scabies causes severe itching that may seem worse at times. For example, the itching may seem more intense after a hot bath or shower or at nighttime. The most common places for scabies to appear are in the folds of your skin, between your toes and fingers, buttocks and genitals. Scabies appear as small, itchy, blistered bumps that may or may not have pus in them.

Treatment

According to the Centers for Disease Control, no over-the-counter product has been approved to treat scabies. Neem oil is an alternative home remedy to conventional medical treatments, which include the use of topical pesticides available by prescription only. Neem oil is available as a topical ointment. Before applying neem oil to a large area of skin, test a small amount on a small area of skin. Pour the oil onto a clean cloth and apply to the irritated area. If the majority of your body is affected, add 2 tbsp. of neem oil to a warm bath and soak for approximately 20 minutes. Consult your physician prior to self-treating with neem oil.

Prevention

Scabies may be prevented by avoiding physical contact with those infected with the condition. In addition, avoid using an infected person's clothing and other personal belongings. If you or someone in your household is affected with scabies, treat every member of your household with topical neem oil, whether they are showing signs or not.
