The number of calories expended in a cardiovascular session varies according to the person. Factors involved include the length, intensity and type of the exercise along with the age, weight and gender of the person.

Calories Burned

Various cardio exercises provide different ranges of calories burned per hour. MayoClinic.com says that "bicycling at a rate of 10 miles per hour burns anywhere from 292 to 436 calories, while using a stair treadmill expends a range of 657 to 981 calories in a 60-minute workout."

Factors

Mayo Clinic.com reports that "body composition and size in addition to age and sex play roles in determining calorie expenditure during cardio." People who weigh more will burn more calories per workout. Men use more calories per cardio session than women because men have leaner muscle mass.

Post-Exercise Metabolism

Cardiovascular exercise burns calories during workouts and increases metabolism hours after the session is completed. Consistent cardiovascular exercise raises the metabolic rate, which helps people lose weight.
