Yellow bumps on the skin ranges from xanthoma on older adults and baby acne on newborns. Baby acne and xanthoma can be unsightly, but baby acne typically disappears on its own while xanthoma will require treatment. If discomfort is present with any yellow bumps, seek medical assistance.

Identification

Xanthoma is most commonly see on the face, elbows, joints, tendons, knees, hands, feet and buttocks, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. The appearance will vary depending on the type of xanthoma you experience; however, in most cases a yellowish patch of skin will be present. Xanthelasma palpebrarum is the most common type and it's found on the upper and low eyelids. This type of xanthoma starts as small bumps, but grows to sizes up to 3 inches in diameter without treatment, according to DermNet NZ. Yellow bumps from baby acne will look like small reddish bumps with yellow pustules on the forehead, cheeks, nose and chin.

Causes

Xanthoma occurs when lipids, also known as fat, build up under the skin's surface causing yellow and red colored lesions on the skin. According to DermNet NZ, some types of xanthomas are caused by lipid metabolism disorders that can increase a person's risk of coronary heart disease. Other medical conditions that can cause xanthomas are primary biliary cirrhosis, diabetes and some types of cancers, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. Baby acne is caused by a hormonal imbalance that will resolve itself within three months, according to the Mayo Clinic website.

Diagnosis

Blood test, urine test and X-rays are often used to diagnose xanthoma, according to DermNet NZ. These tests can help determine the underlying cause of the xanthoma so the disturbance in lipids can be treated. Baby acne can be diagnosed by observation.

Treatment

Xanthoma treatment will depend on the underlying cause. Surgery can be used to remove visible xanthomas. Some additional treatments used are topical trichloroacetic acid, electrodessication and laser, according to DermNet NZ. Treatment of the underlying cause of xanthomas can prevent future bumps from appearing on the skin. In the minor yellowing of baby acne, this does not require treatment. Keep your baby's face clean and avoid using oils or lotions on the facial area.

Considerations

If you suspect you have xanthoma, contact your doctor for additional testing. Several serious disorders are associated with this skin condition; the earlier health problems are caught, the better your chance of successful treatment. In the case of baby acne, it's important not to pick or squeeze the acne since this can cause inflammation and infection.
