Norvasc, also known as amlodipine besylate, is a calcium channel blocker. It is commonly used to treat chest pain and high blood pressure.
Features
Norvasc blocks the calcium entering the cells of the blood vessels, according to MayoClinic.com. Calcium is needed for the blood vessels to contract. Without calcium, the vessels relax and allow more oxygen and blood to flow to the heart. This results in lower blood pressure and decreased chest pain.
Side Effects
Swelling of the feet or ankles is Norvasc's most common side effect, according to MayoClinic.com. Other side effects include dizziness, lightheadedness and headache. Although rare, visual problems and trouble breathing can also appear. Call your doctor if these or any other side effects develop.
Warning
Before taking Norvasc, tell your doctor about the medications you are already taking, present medical conditions and whether you are pregnant, breastfeeding or scheduled for surgery.
Dose
Norvasc is available in pill form. The dosage given depends on the medication strength, your medical problem and your age.
Storage
Store Norvasc at room temperature and far from the reach of children. If accidentally consumed, call the American Association for Poison Control Centers at (800) 222-1222.
