Chai is not a specific type of tea, but rather tea that is served with milk and a sweetener, according to the Pacific College of Oriental Medicine. Chai tea usually contains sweet spices such as cinnamon, cardamom and cloves. Starbucks Chai Tea lattes can be a part of a healthy diet when made with healthy ingredients.

Types

When you order a chai latte at Starbucks, you can choose the type of milk that it's prepared with. Nonfat, 2 percent, whole and soy milk are all options, and the calories in the chai latte will greatly depend on the type of milk you choose. Choose nonfat milk for the lowest amount of calories and fat. Soy milk adds a few more calories, but is also a healthy choice.

Sizes

Starbucks offers four sizes of chai lattes -- a "short" 8 oz., a "tall" 12 oz., a grande 16 oz. and a "venti" 20 oz. You can also choose a 24 oz. venti iced beverage. If you are watching your calories, choose a "short" drink, as it will have only half the calories of a latte that is a "grande."

Basic Nutrition

An 8 oz. Starbucks Tazo Chai Tea Latte prepared with nonfat milk contains 100 calories, 22 g of carbohydrates and 4 g of protein. A 12 oz. chai latte adds 50 calories, 11 g of carbohydrates and 2 g of protein. Should you order the 24 oz. Tazo Iced Chai Latte, you'll be consuming 300 calories, 65 g of carbohydrates and 11 g of protein.
