How to Relieve Sinus Allergies

Sinus allergy relief is a primary concern for many people. Allergies affecting the sinuses cause a variety of uncomfortable and irritable symptoms, including coughing, sneezing and increased nasal drainage. The area around the nose and sinus cavities may feel swollen and tender. Breathing may be difficult due to the increase of mucous in the nose. Consider several different factors, including your environment, medications as well as natural home remedies, when trying to find relief.

Step 1

Take the appropriate medication to relieve symptoms and avoid further complications, such as ear infections or further sinus infections. Consider over-the-counter or prescription medications, including antihistamines or decongestants. Look for medications containing diphenhydramine (Benadryl) or clemastine (Tavist). Discuss with your doctor your symptoms, when they occur and other factors related to your sinus allergies to determine the best medication for you.

Step 2

Consider immunotherapy to relieve sinus allergies if medications are not relieving your symptoms. Understand a series of shots will be administered containing the allergen causing the sinus inflammation--over a period of time, the allergies may actually decrease.

Step 3

Use natural treatments to relieve symptoms. Steam your face with hot water or stand in a hot shower inhaling steam. Cleanse nasal passageways using a neti pot; add 1 tsp. of table salt with 2 cups warm water. Rinse the mucous and secretions from each nostril by inserting arm of neti pot into the nostril. Pour solution into the nostril and allow drain solution out of the other nostril. Rub and massage the sinuses for extra relieve. The massage will increase circulation to the area, reducing pressure.

Step 4

Incorporate physical activity into your daily routine to decrease sinus pressure. Dr. Stanley Farb, author of "The Ear, Nose, and Throat Book: A Doctor's Guide to Better Health," suggests increased exercises adds adrenal to the body. Adding adrenal constricts blood vessels, decreasing swelling in the sinus area. Walking, jogging or even riding your bike are ways to add small amounts of physical activity into your daily routine.
