About one-third of Americans are overweight. If you're at a healthy weight, the Harris Benedict Equation will tell you how many calories to eat to stay at your current weight.
Calorie Estimate
A 150-lb. woman can eat between 1,500 and 1,650 calories to maintain her current weight based on a formula that multiplies 10 or 11 by 150. A man of the same weight can eat between 1,800 and 1,950 calories daily to maintain his current weight based on a formula that calls for multiplying 12 or 13 by 150. This is a very rough estimate that does not take into account your age or activity level.
Basal Metabolic Rate
Your Basal Metabolic Rate determines how many calories you burn while sedentary for a day. The formula for a woman is BMR = 655 + ( 4.35 x weight in pounds ) + ( 4.7 x height in inches ) - ( 4.7 x age in years ). The formal for a male is BMR = 66 + ( 6.23 x weight in pounds ) + ( 12.7 x height in inches ) - ( 6.8 x age in year ).
Activity Level
Calculating your activity level with your BMR, called the Harris Benedict Equation, will tell you how many calories you can consume to stay at your current weight. Multiply your BMR by 1.2 if you're sedentary. Multiply your BMR by 1.55 if you're moderately active. Multiply your BMR by 1.725 if you're very active.
