Teen depression is sometimes left untreated because the symptoms associated with teen depression may be attributed to a phase the teen is going through. When trying to determine the cause of the teen's symptoms, it is important to determine the amount of time the teen has had the symptoms. Generally, if the symptoms have been present over two weeks, depression may be the cause.
Anger
According to HelpGuide.org, anger is often the predominate sign of teenage depression. The teen may be irritated, hostile or grumpy. He may lash out at those close to him. Angry outbursts are common. Feeling sad is also possible. This may lead to trouble making and keeping friends.
Maladies
A teen who is depressed may complain of general aches and pains. Stomachaches and headaches are the most common complaints. Often, these complaints are presented as a way to stay home from school or social events. When a depressed teen is taken to the doctor for these maladies, no cause is usually found.
Carelessness
Not caring about the future or the present are common with depressed teens. This careless attitude may affect school and family life. Grades may begin to fall, and classes may be skipped. At home, chores and self-care routines may be left undone. She may stop brushing her teeth or hair. She may not take baths as frequently as in the past. Her clothes may be dirty, and she may appear unkempt.
Sleeping and Eating
Major changes to eating habits or sleep schedule may signal depression in a teen. Loss of appetite leading to weight loss is common; however, eating too much leading to weight gain is also possible. Insomnia, or having trouble sleeping, and hypersomnia, or sleeping too much, may occur.
Substance Abuse
Using drugs or drinking alcohol are ways that depressed teens try to feel better. Many of the signs of substance abuse are the same as those of depression; however, there are some physical signs that signal substance abuse. Red eyes, flushed cheeks, slurred speech and lack of coordination are all physical signs that point to substance abuse.
Emergency Signs
Running away from home is one sign of a depressed teen that mustn't be ignored. Many teens express an interest or intent to run away prior to actually running away. In this case, a trip to a therapist or counselor may help the teen. Expressing a desire to commit suicide or expressing a desire to harm himself or others warrants a trip to an emergency mental health center.
