Reflux and Heartburn Symptoms

Reflux refers to the regurgitation of stomach contents into the esophagus, per the experts at the Mayo Clinic. The reflux of stomach acid causes a burning sensation in the chest often described as heartburn. Treatment and prevention options exist even for chronic reflux.

Reflux and Heartburn

Reflux and heartburn are two different terms used to describe indigestion. The reflux of acid from the stomach, through the lower esophageal sphincter (LES), and up the esophagus creates the burning sensation associated with heartburn. The burning substance can arrive at the larynx and into the mouth.

Causes

The LES acts as a flap for preventing stomach contents from returning up the esophagus. When it becomes weakened or over taxed it can be forced open, per the medical professionals at the Mayo Clinic. The overproduction of acid, consumption of trigger foods, lying down after eating, bending over after a meal, being overweight, and wearing tight clothes are all potential causes of reflux and heartburn.

Symptoms

Burning from the stomach acids can be felt in the stomach, especially if an ulcer develops according to Health Central. Fullness and nausea are also common symptoms. Other side effects of acid reflux that may not be as recognizable include a dry cough or unexplained hoarseness, the need to repeatedly clear the throat, trouble swallowing, chronic sore throat and persistent hiccups, per Health Central.

Treatment

Antacids can be purchased over-the-counter as well as through a prescription from a doctor. The medicine can be found as a chewable tablet, liquid or capsule. Some are short-term relievers while others are taken long-term to prevent further acid reflux.

Prevention/Solution

Acid reflux can be prevented by monitoring the foods that seem to trigger the acid reflux and improving your diet. Caffeine, chocolate, spicy foods, fried items and citrus are known to cause heartburn in some people, per Mayo Clinic.
