Coaches use volleyball machines in practices to create consistent and accurate shots that most closely replicate game conditions. Other volleyball machines are a variation of nets or return nets to promote shot accuracy. A third type of apparatus builds strength and jumping ability using bungees or a tetherball set-up.

Individual Spiking Drill

Airborne Athletics's AirCAT, or a similar volleyball machine, is set up beside the net and adjusted to provide a perfect set. Positioned a few feet from the net, a player times the set, makes her approach, and spikes the ball. The player returns to the starting spot and repeats the drill for a set number of spikes. The next player then takes her place and begins the drill.

Setting

The AirCAT is positioned approximately 10 feet from the net and adjusted to provide a soft pass to a player positioned at the net. Working with a hitter or hitters, the player practices executing different types of sets.

Tipping and Overpass

The AirCAT is adjusted to deliver a soft set shot just above net height. When the machine is in the same court as the player, this drill allows players to practice tip shots. When the machine is placed in the opposite court, it helps players develop a quick reaction to opponent overpasses.

Serve Receive

Many machines can be set to deliver a variety of service speeds and spins. Players take turns receiving serves to practice passes and digs.

Net Drills

Coaches use machines consisting of target nets in setting, spiking, and serving drills. These machines help players develop target consistency while eliminating the time-consuming task of chasing down shots.

Strength and Technique Machines

The Crush-It is one of the machines that uses bungees or chords to develop strength. This apparatus can be set up in the gym corner, allowing players to work on their spiking skills while other team members are scrimmaging.
