Urinary tract infections, commonly called UTIs, refer to bladder infections that develop in the lower urinary tract. They are often characterized by burning sensations during urination and cloudy, bloody or foul-smelling urine. Women are more prone to urinary tract bladder infections than men, according to MayoClinic.com. Although they are treatable, UTIs can lead to severe complications if left untreated. In addition to doctor-prescribed medications, certain food sources may ease the pain.

Blueberries and Cranberries

Blueberries and cranberries provide a wide array of nutritional benefits. They help combat infections and strengthen the immune system. They also provide hydration and dietary fiber, with few calories. Cranberries and blueberries contain chemical compounds called tannins, which may reduce infection and the possibility of bacteria strains from attaching to urinary tract cells, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. Drinking cranberry juice at the beginning of a UTI may also ease symptoms you experience and decrease infection frequency in women with recurrent urinary tract infections.

Probiotics

Probiotics, medically called friendly bacteria, may contribute to helping UTIs. They are known to counteract toxic bacteria and improve digestive health. Probiotics may also guard the urinary tract and genitals from infections, reports the University of Maryland Medical Center. Valuable food sources of probiotics include kefir, yogurt with live cultures, tempeh buttermilk, fermented miso, sauerkraut and other beverages and foods fortified with probiotics.

Vitamin C-Rich Foods

Ascorbic acids, like vitamin C, are water-soluble nutrients found in vegetables and fruits that assist the body's immune system. Vitamin C may also prevent subsequent urinary tract infections, a common problem for many women, according to Christiane Northrup, M.D., author of "Women's Bodies, Women's Wisdom." She recommends you consume vitamin C at the beginning of a urinary tract infection, such as following frequent sexual activity. Positive vitamin C sources include kale, cauliflower, oranges, papaya, red bell peppers, tomatoes, grapefruit, tomato juice and citrus juices. Since hydration is vital for recovery and during UTI treatment, consume beneficial amounts of vegetables, fruits and juices to accelerate the healing process.
