When it comes to losing weight, there is no shortage of pharmaceutical drugs and supplements available for use. Even if these products come through with their claims, you still subject yourself to unwanted side effects. A natural approach involves making healthy dietary changes. This can keep you free of side effects, but you still need to be disciplined.

Reduction

When you eat excess calories, you create a surplus, which in turn leads to weight gain. A natural slimming diet involves reducing your daily intake. When you do this, your body relies on stored fat for energy and you lose weight. The lowest recommended daily intake for women is 1,200 calories and the lowest recommended intake for men is 1,500 calories, according to the National Institutes of Health.

Effects

Dietary fiber comes in the form of soluble and insoluble. The soluble type gets absorbed in water and insoluble does not. Both types are valuable to the body when it comes to weight loss. High-fiber foods generally require more chewing time, which gives your body time to register when you're no longer hungry, so you're less likely to overeat, according to Mayoclinic.com. It also helps regulate blood sugar levels and promotes intestinal health. Add foods to your diet like fruits, vegetables, beans, whole grains, nuts and seeds.

Frequent Meals

When you eat a large meal then wait long hours before eating again, your metabolism slows down and you become hungry. This can lead to overeating and you will not be able to lose weight. To prevent this, eat more often and eat smaller portions. Have your first meal as soon as you get up and eat every 2 to 3 hours thereafter. Combine protein and complex carbs with each meal. Low-fat cottage cheese with crushed pineapple and seeds mixed in is a meal, for example.

Alcohol Consumption

Alcohol is good and bad when it comes to your overall health. When consumed in moderate amounts, it can promote higher HDL levels, which is your good cholesterol. However, excessive intake can lead to weight gain. Many people under the influence experience "drunk munchies" that can result in the consumption of several hundred extra calories for the day, according to the American Council on Exercise. Keep your intake to no more than two beverages a day.

Considerations

When you want to lose weight, you should definitely take exercise into consideration. By doing cardio and weight training, you will be able to burn calories around the clock. Cardio is performed in a repetitive motion for an extended period of time and it causes you to burn calories as you do it. Weight training builds muscle which increases your resting metabolic rate. Perform cardio four or five days a week and do weight training two or three days a week.

Warning

Before you start a new exercise and eating program, make sure to clear it with your doctor.
