Population outbreaks of a yeast called Candida albicans cause a variety of gastrointestinal and systemic symptoms. This condition, called candidiasis, is often treated through changing the diet. Proponents of a raw food diet claim it eliminates symptoms of candidiasis and provides other health benefits.

Candidiasis

Candida albicans is a type of yeast that occurs naturally in the human gut. When candida proliferates rapidly, it causes an infection. Candidiasis is characterized by fatigue, joint pain, loss of energy, dizziness and gastrointestinal distress, according to The Guide to Raw Foods website. Eliminating sugar from your diet starves candida and restores balance to your gut flora.

Diet Guidelines

The main rule when adopting a raw food diet is to eat foods only in their most fresh, unprocessed state. To improve symptoms of candidiasis, avoid all natural and artificial sugars. A raw food diet requires that you never heat foods above 118 degrees Fahrenheit, according to The Best of Raw Foods website. All foods must be organic and free of pesticide exposure, preservatives and additives. Avoid foods that have been irradiated or pasteurized, as these violate raw food guidelines. Genetically modified organisms are also unacceptable.

Purpose

The purpose of a raw anti-candida diet is to starve the candida yeast and control yeast populations. Candida yeast feed on dietary sugars, and excess sugar can cause them to proliferate. Eating raw foods and avoiding sugary fruits such as apples, pears, citrus fruits and berries removes this food source and kills candida. Proponents of a raw food diet also claim that it boosts immune functioning and restores balanced levels of healthy gut bacteria, according to The Best of Raw Food.

Meal Planning

On a raw anti-candida diet, most meals center around leafy green vegetables. Eat salads with mixed greens and broccoli, carrots, peppers, green onions or avocados. To keep protein levels high, snack on nuts, beans or sprouted seeds. Non-vegetarians can eat smoked or cured meats and fish. Concentrate on balancing your diet with carbohydrates, healthy fats and protein. After candidiasis symptoms abate, slowly reintroduce sugary foods such as fruits into your diet to see what you can tolerate.

Warning

Some nutritionists and scientists believe a raw anti-candida diet can be detrimental to your health. Following a raw diet causes deficiency in vitamin B-12, which is found in animal products. Some raw dieters fail to properly balance their diets and experience other nutrient deficiencies. According to the Mayo Clinic website, there is little evidence to support the diagnosis of candidiasis or to recommend a dietary treatment plan. Consult your doctor before beginning a raw anti-candida diet to ensure that it is a healthy choice for you.
