Push-ups and sit-ups are anaerobic exercises. Anaerobic exercise builds muscle and bone strength, it requires the use of muscle at high intensity for short periods of time. Other examples of anaerobic exercises are weight lifting and sprinting.

Considerations

The amount of calories you burn when performing any exercise will depend on your starting weight. For example a 130 lb person will expend 72 calories during 10 minutes of roller skating and a 180 lb person would burn 100 calories. The calories you burn will also depend on how fast you move and your lean muscle mass.

Push-Ups

Push-ups are an effective exercise to increase upper-body strength. A person weighing 160 lbs would burn 305 calories during a 30 minute session of performing push-ups. A 200 lb person would burn 382 calories during the same time frame.

Sit-Ups

Performing sit-ups regularly will help to improve the strength and tone of abdominal muscles. A 200 lb person can burn 382 calories during 30 minutes of sit-ups, and a 160 lb person will burn around 305 calories. Therefore the calorie expenditure while performing push-up or sit-up exercises is equal.
