Many teens suffer from obesity and weight issues; however, fighting the battle of the bulge can be a difficult thing to do on your own. Weight-loss camps can assist you on your weight-loss journey while teaching you the proper tools needed to lose the weight and keep it off. There is a family weight-loss camp in Michigan available to teenagers and children.
Family Camp
Wellspring family camp is the first family weight-loss camp in the country and is located in Michigan's upper peninsula near Clear Lake. The camp helps children from ages 5 to 15 lose weight, however, at least one parent or grandparent must attend the camp with the child. The camp lasts for two weeks and those two weeks are spent learning the skills needed to successfully lose weight.
Behavioral Therapy
Wellspring uses cognitive behavioral therapy to change the camper's way of thinking and behavior that can help him maintain a healthy lifestyle. These therapists are trained in approaches to weight loss and will help you to set goals, solve problems and journal.
Diet
The camper attending wellspring will learn how to prepare many healthy meals at home by working with a culinary instructor. She will be provided healthy meals at the camp, along with low-fat snacks. The portion sizes are controlled at each meal.
Each camper will also meet with a dietitian to learn about the food pyramid and eating healthy. He will learn how to eat healthy at restaurants and make good choices at the grocery store.
Exercise
Activities are scheduled every day of the camper's stay, and they are scheduled all day long throughout the day. Some of the activities may include swimming, soccer, weight training, boating, self-defense, biking, tennis and working with a professional fitness trainer. A portion of the activities are for the entire family staying at the camp, while some of them are for the child only. Each person staying at the camp will wear a pedometer and will set a goal of reaching 10,000 steps per day.
After Care
After the stay at the Wellspring family camp, each child will have access to the use of Wellspring's continuing care program online. This website will give her a place to journal, set goals, weigh in and work with her behavioral coach. The behavioral coach will continue to monitor and work with the family via the website.
