There are three main types of exercise, which are aerobic, anaerobic, and flexibility exercise. Each type provides distinct benefits and different types of exercises will burn varying amounts of calories. The amount of calories you burn will also depend on your weight.

Aerobic

Aerobic exercises generally improve your cardiovascular endurance and stamina. Some exercises that fall into this category are running, walking and cycling. A person weighing 160 lbs will burn around 134 calories when walking at a pace of 3 mph for 30 minutes. If he runs at a pace of 6 mph he will burn 382 calories. Cycling for 30 minutes at a moderate pace of around 13 mph will result in an expenditure of 305 calories.

Anaerobic

Anaerobic exercises are strength and resistance exercises that improve muscle and bone strength. Examples of anaerobic exercises are weight lifting and performing push ups. A 160 lb person will burn between 113 and 227 calories depending on the weight lifted during a 30 minute workout. Push ups will expend 305 calories during 30 minutes.

Flexibility

Flexibility exercises improve joint and muscle flexibility. Examples of flexibility exercises are Hatha yoga and gymnastics. A 30 minute Hatha yoga session will burn 95 calories for a 160 lb person, and 30 minutes of gymnastics will expend 153 calories.
