Good nutrition during the first trimester of pregnancy especially is important for the proper development of the fetal brain. The nervous system of an unborn baby has begun to form often before the mother has even discovered that she is pregnant. Mothers need to eat a healthy and balanced diet in order to provide the necessary nutrients to their unborn baby. If the mother does not eat healthy and take a prenatal vitamin, the baby will be deficient and proper development may not occur.
Iodine
According to a study published in the "American Journal of Clinical Nutrition," iodine deficiency is the most common cause of altered brain development. A deficiency in iodine can cause such conditions as deafness, cerebral palsy and muteness. Severe iodine deficiency can cause the brain to be smaller and weigh less than normal. Iodine can be supplemented in the diet by using iodized salt or by taking an iodine supplement. Some multivitamins contain iodine as well. Seaweed is also a good source of iodine.
Choline
Choline is a mineral that is vital for the development and growth of the fetal brain in utero. Choline helps form cell membranes. Low levels of choline during pregnancy can impact blood vessel and nerve cell development in the fetal brain. To make sure that adequate choline is taken in during pregnancy, eat foods such as milk, eggs and peanuts if not allergic.
Omega-3 Fatty Acids
Omega-3 fatty acids are found in both fish and some plants such as flax seeds. Omega-3s are essential in the formation of the brain and central nervous system. If you are unable to eat enough fish or plant sources of these fatty acids, you may take a supplement. Consult with your obstetrician regarding the type of supplement to take and the dosage.
Copper
Copper is a mineral that helps with the formation of neurotransmitters in the brain that allow the brain cells to communicate and relay messages to various parts of the body. A copper deficiency may impact the memory center of the brain. Foods that contain copper are beef liver, barley, mushrooms and canned tomato puree.
Folic Acid
Folic acid is one of the most important nutrients for pregnant women to take, even while trying to conceive. Folic acid helps reduce many defects of the central nervous system and brain. Folic acid helps ensure that cells divide properly. Some conditions that are prevented by taking folic acid include spina bifida, where the lower part of the spinal column is exposed leading to paralysis, and anencephaly, where the brain and skull are severely underdeveloped. Folic acid is included in all prenatal vitamins. Ask your doctor how much folic acid is recommended for your situation.
