Dry scalp occurs when the glands in the scalp do not produce enough oil to keep the scalp and hair moisturized. The condition is often confused for dandruff, according to Hair Finder, because it causes itching and flaking. A dry scalp can be caused by genetic or environmental factors. Cleansing a dry scalp can be problematic as many shampoos contain chemicals that can strip the hair's natural oils. Chris-Tia E. Donaldson, author of "Thank God I'm Natural," recommends cleansing with conditioner. Also known as the "No-poo" method, cleansing with conditioner removes excess dirt from the scalp without stripping essential oils.
Step 1
Wet your hair with warm water. Massage your scalp under the spray to stimulate blood flow and help loosen dirt.
Step 2
Pour a quarter-sized portion of the cream rinse into the palm of your hand. Massage the conditioner into your scalp and the roots of your hair.
Step 3
Use the wide-toothed comb to distribute the conditioner to the ends of your hair.
Step 4
Rinse your hair thoroughly. "Lather" a second time, per the directions in Step 2, and rinse.
Step 5
Pour a quarter-sized portion of the moisturizing conditioner into the palm of your hand. Work the conditioner from the roots to the ends and thoroughly coat your hair --- apply more conditioner if necessary.
Step 6
Comb through your hair to evenly distribute the conditioner. Let the conditioner sit for up to 5 minutes.
Step 7
Rinse your hair thoroughly and pat your hair dry with a towel.
Step 8
Apply the leave-in conditioner, if desired. Comb through your hair to evenly distribute the conditioner. Dry and style your hair as usual
Tips and Warnings
- Wash your hair with a mild shampoo, such as baby shampoo, no more than once every two weeks to remove buildup and styling residue. Only lather your hair, avoid your roots and scalp as much as possible.
