Pistachios contain many nutrients, antioxidants, vitamins and minerals. They are a good source of healthy, or unsaturated, fat. The American Heart Association states that eating a handful of pistachio nuts daily may lower the risk of heart disease.

Serving Size

One serving of pistachios is an ounce. This tree nut is one of the lowest in calories than all others, with 1 oz. containing only 160 calories.

Unsaturated Fats

The American Heart Association recommends replacing saturated fats in the diet with healthier, unsaturated ones. Pistachios contain both linoleic and oleic acid, which are unsaturated fats that may help reduce blood cholesterol levels.

Fiber

One ounce of pistachios contains 3 grams of fiber, which is 12 percent of the recommended daily value for a 2,000 calorie diet. Both the American Dietetic Association and the American Heart Association state that fiber is good for the digestive system as well as for the heart.

Nutrients

Nutrient-dense pistachios contain 8 percent of the daily value of potassium, 16 percent of thiamin, 20 percent of vitamin B6, and 14 percent of phosphorous. These nutrients are essential to the body to keep cells functioning correctly.

Antioxidants

Antioxidants have been shown to help prevent disease. Pistachios contain a variety of antioxidants, such as lutein, which may play a role in eye health, cancer prevention and cardiovascular health.
