The women of the South Pacific have been using unrefined, virgin coconut oil on their skin and hair for years. Coconut oil contains saturated fats known as medium-chain fatty acids that are unlike the long-chain fatty acids found in animal products known for promoting chronic diseases. In North America, saturated fats have a bad reputation; however, when taken on a regular basis, the plant-derived fats found in coconut oil have many benefits, including the prevention of heart disease, thyroid health and the treatment of painful menstruation. Used as a daily skin moisturizer, coconut oil can also benefit the health of your skin.

Dry Skin

Coconut oil can be used all over the body for dry skin conditions; the small chemical structure of coconut oil allows it to easily absorb into the skin without a leaving a greasy feel. Healthy-oil-planet.com recommends applying the coconut oil all over the body while in the shower; using warm water to rinse off any excess oil and patting your skin dry with a towel. If done at bedtime, your skin will reap the benefits by the morning.

Skin Infections

The medium-chain fatty acids in coconut oil can be used to treat bacterial and fungal infections when used topically. Virgin coconut oil contains lauric acid, a fatty acid with natural antibacterial properties. According to the Coconut Oil Research Center, ringworm, diaper rash and athlete's foot may benefit from the regular application of this oil.

Premature Aging

Free radical damage from the sun's rays is the main cause of premature aging. When applied to the skin regularly, coconut oil may help prevent liver spots, blemishes that appear with aging. If used alone or under make-up, coconut oil may also prevent free-radical formation, thus slowing down the development of fine lines and deep wrinkles.
