The state of Maryland has over 231 golf courses --- public and private --- making the state a popular destination for golfers of all skill levels. From its top-rated public course in Havre de Grace to more casual courses such as the one in Annapolis, golfers to the area can find the type of course they desire.
Washington, D.C. Suburbs
If you're in the Maryland-side suburbs of Washington, D.C., there are numerous public golf courses for you to choose from.
The Blue Mash golf course in Olney has 18 holes with a par of 71/72. This golf course, which opened in 2001, was designed by Arthur Mills, an architect who was selected by Golf Digest as one of the best modern golf course architects. The Bowie Golf and Country Club in Bowie has 18 holes with a par of 72. This course opened in 1959 and was designed by the team Robers/Murray as a mid-level course for golfers of all skill levels. The Hampsire Greens Golf Course in Silver Spring has 18 holes with a par of 72. Opened in 1999, this course was designed by Lisa Maki and features bent grass on its greens and fairways. It has almost 6,900 yards from the tips and just over 5,000 yards from the forward tees.
Baltimore
If you're in or near Baltimore, you're never far from a public golf course.
The Bulle Rock Golf Course in Havre de Grace, designed by Pete Dye, opened in 1998. This bentgrass course has been highly praised in "Golf Digest," "Golf Magazine," "Golf Week," the "Washington Golf Monthly" and "Golf for Women." "Golf Digest" ranked this course as the best public golf course in Maryland. Clifton Park is Baltimore's first public golf course. It was built in 1915 on the grounds of Johns Hopkins' summer mansion. It has 18 holes.
Carroll Park is one of Baltimore's Classic Five courses, along with Clifton Park, Forest Park, Pine Ridge and Mount Pleasant. It has nine holes and is perfect for beginners. This course is frequented by local businessmen looking to play quick two-hole rounds before work.
Ocean City
There are several public golf courses in and around Ocean City.
The Beach Club in Berlin was designed by Ed and Brian Ault in 1991. This 27-hole golf course has a par of 72 and features bent grass on its greens and fairways. This course also has a 24-station driving range and putting and chipping greens. The Deer Run Golf Park has 18 holes for a par of 70. It opened in 1998 and is a championship golf course designed by the "Whole in One Design" company. Its fairways range from 110 yards to 595 yards and offer a complexity of play ranging from middling to expert levels. The Links at Lighthouse Sound has 18 tree-lined holes for a par of 72. This course was designed by Arthur Hills and opened in 1999. The holes on this course feature such things as marshland and wildlife to make the game more interesting.
Southern Maryland
If you're in southern Maryland, there are numerous golf courses that are open to the public.
The Annapolis Golf Club in Annapolis features nine holes for a small, quiet, short golfing experience. The Bay Hills Golf Club in Arnold has 18 holes for a par of 70. It was designed in 1969 by Ed Ault and features bent grass on its greens and Zoysia on its fairways. The Eisenhower Golf Course in Crownsville features 18 holes for a par of 71. This course was designed by Ed Ault in 1969 and has bent grass on its greens and rye grass on its fairways.
Western Maryland
If you're in the western side of the state, there are public golf courses that are available.
The Black Rock Golf Course in Hagerstown has 18 holes for a par of 72. This course was opened in 1989 and was designed by Bob Elder. It features bent grass on its greens and fairways. The Fore Sisters Golf Course in Rawlings has 18 holes for a par of 71. It has sloped fairways, elevated greens, dense roughs and natural formations that present a unique challenge to golfers of all skill levels. The Maryland National Golf Club in Middletown has 18 holes for a par of 71. This course was designed by the critically acclaimed course architect Arthur Hills and opened in 2002. The course design takes advantage of the area's wetlands and has long, rolling fairways, natural wooded lowlands and various water hazards.
