History of Aerobics
Jackie Sorensen is the original creator of aerobic dance as a form of fitness exercise, explains IDEA Fitness Journal. In 1969, Sorensen, who was originally a dance teacher, was asked to create an exercise program on closed-circuit television for wives of Air Force men based in Puerto Rico, where Sorensen's husband was stationed. Based on research that Dr. Kenneth Cooper, an Air Force surgeon, did on aerobic activity and cardiovascular fitness, Sorensen incorporated popular dance movements to up-tempo music that increased heart rates over lengthened periods of time. After 12 weeks, the participants of Sorensen's workout sessions all showed signs of improved fitness and weight loss, beginning an evolutionary era in cardiovascular fitness.

Low-impact dance aerobics are modified dance moves that are more gentle on the knees, hips and shoulders, and may involve smaller movements and little or no jumping. Specialized aerobic dance classes like hip-hop, belly dancing, Latin and line dancing incorporate different styles of choreographed dance and technique that are equally effective aerobic exercises.
