Vitamins and various nutritional and health supplements are components of an alternative or complementary approach to health care. Vitamin companies in the United States have developed ever better ways to deliver nutrients to the body, such as time-release vitamin tablets and water-soluble vitamin powders. The industry will continue to expand, according to a CNBC report, as the Baby Boom generation gets older and looks for ways to increase the quality of their golden years.

NBTY, Inc.

NBTY, Inc., is a publicly traded company (NYSE stock symbol "NTY") headquartered in Ronkonkoma, New York. The company manufactures brands such as Solgar, Ester-C, Nature's Bounty and Sundown in plants located in Canada, the UK and the United States. According to Hoovers.com, NBTY, Inc., manufactures and sells over 25,000 vitamins, herbs, minerals and sports drinks, and is the biggest source of nutritional supplements in the United States.

GNC Corporation

Headquartered in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, the privately owned GNC Corporation manufactures its own brand of vitamins and sells them in about 4,800 retail locations across the United States. Through a deal with the drug store Rite Aid, you can now also find GNC products in over 1,000 Rite Aids, and the company also operates over 1,000 franchises. According to ZoomInfo.com, the company generated $1.5 billion in revenue in 2008.

Schiff Nutrition International, Inc.

This publicly traded company (NYSE stock symbol "WNI") is based in Salt Lake City, Utah. It is involved in developing, manufacturing, marketing and distributing nutritional supplements, vitamins and nutritional bars. Some of its brands include Tiger's Milk and Move Free. Move Free is a line of vitamins and supplements that supports joint health. According to ZoomInfo.com, the Move Free line of products was responsible for almost 50 percent of the company's total net sales in 2008. The company's revenues for that year were $172.7 million.
