Curves, also called Curves for Women, has nearly 10,000 locations, making it the largest fitness franchise worldwide. Each Curves location offers a 30-minute circuit-training workout for women only.
Definition
Every Curves location offers a standardized workout, including two full circuits of weight machines followed by five minutes of stretching. During the circuit, exercisers alternate 30 seconds of weightlifting with 30 seconds of walking, jogging or marching on springy boards positioned between the weight machines.
Calorie Count
According to a 2005 study commissioned by the American Council on Exercise, a typical Curves workout burns an average of 184 calories. One of the researchers, Kristin Greany, M.S., R.D., compared the intensity of a Curves workout to walking at 4 mph on a treadmill.
Considerations
To lose a pound of body fat, you must burn 3,500 calories more than you take in. You would need to do about 19 Curves workouts to lose a pound of fat. But because you are supposed to wait a day between strength training sessions, you would need to space the workouts over 38 days or longer. Supplementing your Curves workouts with other exercise can help you lose the weight faster.
