Bitter oranges are not what they sound like. They aren't bitter versions of the tasty orange fruit. Rather, bitter orange is an herb that's used for a variety of ailments and conditions. Although used as an alternative cure and linked to many health benefits, many of bitter orange's claimed uses are not backed by scientific studies.
Weight Loss
Bitter orange can supposedly help you lose weight. It's loaded with vitamins and mineral, which raise your metabolism. This can boost your energy levels and the number of calories you burn. The logical conclusion,is that bitter orange can help you lose weight by eliminating fats and suppressing the appetite. But this has not been proven.
Skin Infections
Bitter orange has a legitimate use for skin infections. It's sometimes prescribed or recommended for treating fungal infections such as athlete's foot, ringworm and jock itch that affect the skin. The bitter orange herb may be incorporated into a cream for easier application.
Digestive Upset
Bitter orange has been used as an alternative remedy in folk medicine for treating intestinal issues and digestive upset. For instance, diarrhea, constipation, gas and intestinal ulcers can purportedly be treated with the bitter orange herb. Again, however, this hasn't been proven in any studies.
Other Conditions
Bitter orange has been linked to treating a variety of other conditions in Latin America and in traditional Chinese medicine. These conditions include cancer, high cholesterol, liver disease, colds, chronic fatigue syndrome, nasal congestion, diabetes, headaches, insomnia and muscle pain.
