Hard liquor, unlike beer or wine, is an alcoholic beverage that is distilled rather than fermented. While liquor --- like vodka, Scotch and rum --- is low in fat, cholesterol and sodium, you should be mindful of calorie and sugar content.
Calorie Information
According to 2005's Dietary Guidelines for Americans, one serving of generic 80 proof gin, rum, vodka and whiskey, at 1.5 fluid oz has 96 calories. The calories in hard liquor come almost exclusively from alcohol.
Specific Brands
Calorie data will change when you start looking at specific brands of hard liquor. Vanilla Stolichnaya has 69 calories per ounce, which is less than a typical serving size. One ounce of Glenlivet single malt Scotch contains 70 calories. An ounce of Captain Morgan Original Spiced Rum contains 75 calories.
Considerations
Flavoring liquors, popular with rum and vodka, will up the calorie content, especially when more sugar is added. Mixers also increase calories in your favorite drinks. A cup of Coca-Cola, often mixed with rum, can have more than 100 calories. Fruit juices, like pineapple or cranberry, which are often added to vodka, can also have more than 100 calories in a cup.
