If you struggle with insomnia, a type of sleep disorder that makes it hard for you to fall asleep or stay asleep, you may benefit from taking melatonin. This type of supplement is a synthetic version of the naturally-occurring hormone melatonin, which is involved in regulating your body's normal circadian rhythm or sleep-wake cycle. Headache or Dizziness

Headache pain or dizziness may occur as side effects following treatment with melatonin, the University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC) warns. You may have difficulty focusing at work or school due to discomfort caused by headache pain. Episodes of dizziness may also exacerbate head pain or may interfere with your ability to stand or walk without assistance. Seek care from a physician if you experience severe or recurrent headache pain or dizzy spells.

Daytime Drowsiness or Nightmares

You should only take melatonin immediately before you intend to go to sleep, as treatment with melatonin induces drowsiness. Sensations of tiredness may extend into the daytime, MayoClinic.com reports, which may negatively impact your attentiveness or concentration level. Melatonin may also cause vivid dreams or nightmares while you are sleeping. Nightmares may cause you to wake repeatedly throughout the night, increasing your level of fatigue during the day.

Stomach Discomfort

While taking this supplement, you may experience stomach upset side effects, Drugs.com explains. Stomach discomfort, such as cramping, may occur, which may also lead to nausea or appetite loss. Consult a doctor as soon as possible if you experience severe or sudden abdominal pain for any reason.

Sexual Changes

Repeated use of melatonin may cause a decrease in your normal sexual libido. Men taking this type of supplement may also experience additional sexual changes including decreased sperm count and enlargement of the breast tissue, the UMMC warns. If you experience any of these side effects of taking melatonin and find them bothersome, contact your primary health care provider.

Mood or Behavioral Changes

If you have a mood or behavioral disorder, such as depression, talk with your doctor before taking melatonin. Treatment with this supplement may increase depression symptoms in certain people, the UMMC reports. You may also experience other mood or behavioral changes such as confusion or irritability. Seek additional care from your physician if you develop mood or behavioral side effects that disrupt your normal daily activities.
