Eczema Vs. Psoriasis

Eczema and psoriasis are two types of skin conditions that can sometimes be confused with one another, as their symptoms and appearance are similar. However, the causes, treatments and age distribution in relation to eczema and psoriasis differ.

Cause

Both eczema and psoriasis may be genetic conditions, and neither are contagious. Eczema can be caused by allergies or skin irritants, while psoriasis is caused by immune system problems.

Appearance

Eczema is characterized by red, itchy skin patches that swell. Psoriasis is also red and itchy, but is also silvery-tinged and can be painful.

Age

According to diffen.com, eczema is most common amongst babies and children, while psoriasis usually develops during adulthood.

Allergies and Arthritis

Eczema is associated with allergies, while psoriasis is sometimes correlated with psoriatic arthritis.

Prevention/Solution

According to Medline Plus, there is no cure for eczema. However, it can be treated with prescription ointments and be prevented by avoiding skin irritants. Psoriasis is treated with light therapy, ointments and prescription medications.
