Fish oil contains vital heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids, which have been used to lower bad cholesterol and raise good cholesterol. Fish oil also helps prevent cardiac death, strokes and abnormal heart rhythm. You can get these benefits from eating oily fish, taking fish supplements or using fish oil. Fish oil that contains both DHA and EPA have the most benefits for the heart.

Step 1

Create a salad dressing using fish oil instead of other oils. Make a heart-healthy oil and vinegar salad dressing even healthier by adding fish oil along with olive oil. You can also drizzle fish oil on top of your salad.

Add fish oil into your meat dishes. Most meat contains cholesterol, which over time can contribute to heart disease and high cholesterol levels. Adding fish oil to your food after its cooked may help combat these risks. In addition to adding to fish oil onto meat, you can also add fish oil on baked or grilled fish.

Add fish oil into a baked potato in place of butter.

Use fish oil in soups or stews after they are cooked.

  • You can also add fish oil into smoothies or shakes to give it a powerful heart healthy twist. Health.com specifies that you should ingest at least 500mg of fish oil a day.
  • Do not give fish oil to children under the age of 18 without the permission of a physician. People who have fish allergies or hypersensitivity to fish should avoid using fish oil or taking fish oil supplements. Do not take more than the recommended amount of fish oil, as taking too much fish oil can cause an increased risk of bleeding and stoke. According to MayoClinic.com, this can also cause nosebleeds and blood in the urine.
