Grapefruit can add flavor as well as some much-needed fiber to a diet. It contains several essential minerals and vitamins, including potassium, which the American Heart Association has identified as a key element for lower blood pressure.

Fiber

Grapefruit is a good source of dietary fiber, containing 8 percent of the recommended daily amount in just half a grapefruit. Fiber is helpful to the digestive system and may help keep cholesterol at a healthy level.

Vitamin C

Just one half of a grapefruit contains 100 percent of the daily-recommended amount of vitamin C. This antioxidant is known to help prevent disease by fighting cell damage, supports the immune system, increases the absorption of iron and is necessary for collagen production.

Potassium

Potassium is an essential mineral that assists the body in muscle contraction, nerve impulse conduction and cellular fluid balance. According to the American Heart Association, a diet containing high-potassium foods may lower high blood pressure.

Vitamin A

Half a grapefruit contains 35 percent of the recommended daily allowance of vitamin A, in the form of beta-carotene. This carotenoid is essential for a healthy immune system, growth and reproduction, and healthy eyesight.
