Ayurveda is an ancient Indian healing system that has been used for thousands of years to heal and promote wellness. According to the Ayurvedic Institute, Ayurveda has been used for more than 5,000 years. It is thought to work by promoting a sense of balance among the body, mind and spirit. Oils, herbs and certain healing practices are incorporated into an Ayurvedic treatment. Some Ayurvedic oils are believed to help to alleviate the autoimmune hair loss condition, alopecia areata.
Types of Alopecia Areata
Alopecia areata is a hair loss condition that can result in partial or total hair loss on your scalp and on the rest of your body. According to the National Alopecia Areata Foundation, there are three types of alopecia areata. Alopecia areata is the term used for hair loss that occurs in small, round patches, usually on the scalp. Alopecia areata totalis is a complete hair loss of the scalp. Alopecia areata universalis is the most rare type of alopecia areata, manifesting total hair loss on the scalp and the entire body.
Causes of Alopecia Areata
According to the National Alopecia Areata Foundation, alopecia areata is caused when something causes the immune system to trigger suppression of the hair follicle, inhibiting hair growth. It is not currently known what causes the trigger. Researchers believe there is a genetic component to alopecia.
Misconceptions
Alopecia areata is often called a "stress illness," meaning that it is caused by excessive stress, worry or anxiety. However, alopecia areata is not caused by a nervous disorder, according to the National Alopecia Foundation. If you suffer from alopecia areata, there is nothing you have done to cause it and no way for you to control its course.
Ayurvedic Treatments
According to author and Ayurvedic healer Light Miller in her book, "Ayurvedic Remedies for the Whole Family," certain Ayurvedic oils may help to alleviate alopecia areata. She recommends ginger, coriander, gold chamomile, birch or sandalwood essential oil diluted in a carrier oil such as coconut or sesame oil for scalp massage. Miller also recommends medicated Ayurvedic oils for topical application including Bhringaraja, Brahmi or Amla oils. Rubbing your head with these oils is said to help to prevent baldness and improve hair growth.
Warning
There is little Western scientific evidence to support the claims that Ayurvedic oils are an effective treatment for alopecia areata. Always inform your doctor before using any herbs or other alternative treatments.
