Hepatitis C, or chronic inflammation of the liver, is caused by HCV, or hepatitis C virus. HCV spreads when you come in contact with contaminated needles or injecting equipments. The virus invades liver cells for viral replication and the result is severe inflammation of the liver with long-term complications. The end-stage complication of hepatitis C is liver failure and liver cancer. There is convincing evidence supporting the use of ayurvedic herbs as a treatment for hepatitis C, but first consult with your medical service provider before considering any herbal treatments.
Milk Thistle
Milk thistle is an herb whose fruit and seeds are used to make medicine, most commonly for liver disorders. It acts as a cytoprotectant for the liver, meaning milk thistle protects liver cells against viruses and poisons, such as alcohol. Milk thistle is an herbal medications often prescribed by herbalists for hepatitis C patients. The inhibitory action of milk thistle against HCV is attributed to its active substance silymarin, which is a mixture of flavonolignans.
Ginseng
Ginseng is an herbal product made from the roots of several plant species of the genus Panax. People often use ginseng products, hoping to restore function to a liver that has been impaired due to chronic hepatitis C disease. Ginseng contains complex carbohydrates, known as ginsenocides, which are responsible for its healing properties, according to National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine.
Licorice
Glycyrrhiza glabra, commonly known as licorice, is a flavorful herb. It has a long history as a valuable herbal remedy. Licorice contains biologically active components glycyrrhizin and silymarin, which give most of the healing properties linked to licorice. Researchers also suggest that silymarin and glycyrrhizin exhibit protective action on the liver against hepatitis C, according to University of Michigan Health System.
