Herbal Treatments for Panic Disorder

Panic is a common disorder that involves a feeling of being agitated. There are physical symptoms of panic including shaking, a racing heart, lack of focus, problems sleeping, irritability, a roiling stomach and changes to the rhythm of breathing, notes the University of Maryland Medical Center. There are many types of treatments for panic. Herbs are often used to treat this disorder. Always consult with your doctor before beginning any naturopathic treatment with herbs at home.

Passionflower

Passionflower, also called Passiflora incarnata, is an herb used to treat panic. Treatment of anxiety with this herb has been found as helpful as benzodiazepines, notes the University of Maryland Medical Center. This herb increases the level of gamma-aminobutyric acid in the brain to aid relaxation. Dried passionflower is used to make a calming tea. Place 1 tsp. of dried passionflower in boiling water and let it steep for 10 minutes. Then remove the herb before drinking the tea. Take the tea three to four times daily. An extract of the herb is also taken in a dose of 10 to 30 drops a day. Further study is needed to fully determine the power of passionflower to treat panic.

Valerian

Valerian is a nervine, a nerve tonic to soothe panic, notes the University of Michigan Health Center. It is taken with passionflower to quell the emotional and physical symptoms of panic. This natural remedy for anxiety is believed to be very effective against panic.

Jasmine, Bergamot and Lemon Balm

Herbs that are commonly used as essential oils in aromatherapy to calm panic include jasmine, bergamot and lemon balm, reports the University of Maryland Medical Center. The essential oils are used by adding them to a bath to create a soothing aroma or by spraying them on the body or in the air via an atomizer or dabbing the essential oil on the pulse points after soaking it on a cotton ball.

Skullcap and Dandelion

The herbs skullcap and dandelion are also helpful natural treatments for panic, notes Brooklyn College. They combine to help the body and mind to relax, herbalists claim. These herbs may help end the focus on worry that leads to anxiety.

Chamomile

The herb chamomile is also used to treat panic, notes the University of Maryland Medical Center. Chamomile is often dried to use to make a calming tea. Let the dried herbs steep in hot water and then remove them before drinking the tea.
