The eucalyptus tree, a powerfully medicinal evergreen tree native to Australia, has been used for centuries by indigenous healers. Today, the eucalyptus tree's fragrant oil is used as a component of complementary, alternative and integrative medicine. There is very little evidence that eucalyptus oil can effectively treat the causes or symptoms of bruising, but some people use eucalyptus oil as a home remedy for pain, swelling and discoloration associated with bruises. Consult your health care provider before using any naturopathic remedy.
Causes of Bruises
Bruises are most commonly associated with blunt injuries. A bruise forms when small blood vessels burst, causing blood to leak into the upper area of the skin. This leaked blood causes a bluish or violet discoloration of the affected area. Most bruises resolve with no treatment within a few days. If you experience large, extremely painful bruises, consult your health care provider. These may be signs of a more serious underlying medical condition.
Pain-Relieving Effects
Eucalyptus oil may help to relieve pain and inflammation. Topical eucalyptus preparations are commonly used as treatments for rheumatoid arthritis and other inflammatory illnesses, although MedlinePlus states that there is insufficient evidence of its efficacy. Vicks VapoRub, a product containing eucalyptus, menthol and camphor, is approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to temporarily relieve minor aches and pains on muscles and joints. However, the other ingredients may be responsible for its pain-relieving effects. Although unstudied as a specific treatment for bruises, it is plausible that eucalyptus oil's anti-inflammatory effects can combat pain and swelling associated with bruising.
Dose
The dose of eucalyptus oil will depend on how you intend to take it to reduce your symptoms of bruising. If you are using it topically, the University of Maryland Medical Center recommends diluting 15 to 30 drops of eucalyptus oil per 1/2 cup of a carrier oil such as sesame oil, almond oil or olive oil. Apply this mixture directly to the bruised area several times per day. You can also add eucalyptus to a hot bath and soak the affected area to relieve pain and inflammation.
Warning
Eucalyptus oil can be dangerous when it is used inappropriately. Don't use eucalyptus products on young children, as they can cause serious breathing problems. Eucalyptus oil taken by mouth is not safe for anyone. MedlinePlus notes that oral doses as low as 3/4 tsp. can cause death in healthy adults. Eucalyptus oil can also trigger serious reactions when applied undiluted to a person's skin. Follow all dosing guidelines before using essential oils for any purpose.
Alternatives
There are several other treatment options that you can use instead of, or in addition to, eucalyptus oil. If you have a bruise, MayoClinic.com recommends applying ice or a cold pack to the bruised area as soon as possible. Repeat this once or twice per day to reduce pain and swelling. Oral pain relievers such as ibuprofen, naproxen and acetaminophen can also help to relieve the symptoms of bruises.
