The circulatory system consists of the heart and blood vessels that bring blood to the body. Conditions and diseases that affect this body system impede the ability of proper blood flow. Many of these diseases and disorders are prevented by diet and treated using drug therapy.
Causes
Causes of circulatory diseases and disorders vary depending on the condition. Heart disease is caused by thickening of the vessel walls or plaque buildup. Some circulatory conditions are heredity, and others are acquired from infection from bacteria and viruses.
Symptoms
Symptoms from heart disease may go unnoticed, but the most common symptoms are shortness in breath, chest pain, and fatigue. Serious conditions like congestive heart failure include fluid buildup in the legs, kidney failure and possible cardiac arrest.
Diagnosis
Several diagnostic techniques are used to identify the condition. Blood tests are taken initially. To further verify the condition, doctors also order an MRI, chest X-ray, CT scan and an electrocardiogram (ECG).
Treatment
Lifestyle changes are required when circulatory diseases are diagnosed. Medications such as diuretics, angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors or beta blockers are prescribed. Surgery may be required for serious conditions such as heart disease from severe plaque buildup.
Prevention
Preventative measures can be taken to limit the risk of circulatory diseases and disorders. Smoking severely increases the risk of heart disease. A healthy diet and staying physically active maintains the health of the circulatory system.
