Ginger has long been used in many cultures as a cure for a myriad of ailments. It has been used to soothe nausea and stomach problems, to lessen the severity of indigestion, to counteract sore throats and even as a remedy to fend off common illnesses, such as the cold or the flu. Ginger alone is a strong, flavorful and potent ingredient. When mixed with other herbs or ingredients, ginger can aid in soothing an even wider variety of symptoms.
Plain Ginger Tea
The easiest remedy to make is plain ginger tea. All you have to do is slice some peeled ginger root and place it in a pot of boiling water. Allow the tea to simmer for about 20 minutes, but make sure you check and taste the tea periodically to ensure it doesn't become too strong for your liking. Strain the tea and use a bit of your favorite sweetener to enhance the taste.
Ginger and Rooibos Tea
Ginger tea is great for indigestion and heartburn, as is roobios tea. Blend ½ tsp. rooibos with ½ tsp. freshly grated ginger and allow it to steep in hot water for 15 minutes for a tea that is effective and tasty.
Peppermint Ginger Tea
Peppermint ginger tea is a great alternative for those who don't like the spicy taste of plain ginger. Peppermint not only will enhance the flavor of your tea but also will work to soothe the stomach, clear your sinuses or alleviate other cold and flu symptoms. Place ½ tbsp. dried ginger (or ½ tsp. freshly grated ginger) and ½ tbsp. dried peppermint (or 2 tbsp. fresh peppermint leaves) into a teaball or teabag. Allow the herbs to steep for 5 to 10 minutes before enjoying your tea.
Ginger Cinnamon Tea
Cinnamon is also believed to have healing properties, particularly when it comes to stomach ailments such as flatulence, digestive disorders and even the common cold. Simply add ½ cup sliced fresh ginger and two cinnamon sticks to 6 cups of boiling water. Strain the tea after 15 to 20 minutes and sweeten it with honey or sugar to your desired taste.
