A half marathon, a popular race for runners, leads to the burning of a lot of calories. The number of calories you burn in a half marathon depends on several factors, including how much you weigh and how fast you run.

Half Marathon Distance

A half marathon is 13.1 miles, half the distance of a marathon. Most half marathons are run on paved roads.

Running Speed

The number of calories you burn in a half marathon varies according to how fast you run. At a slow run, about 11.5 minutes per mile, a 150-pound runner burns 1,625 calories. Running 9-minute miles, your burn goes up to nearly 2,000 calories. At a competitive pace of 7 minutes per mile, a half marathon burns nearly 3,000 calories.

Body Weight

Heavier people burn more calories than other people in all activities. At a 9-minute-per-mile pace, a 170-pound runner burns 1,770 calories in a half marathon -- 145 more than a 150-pound runner. A 200-pound runner moving at the same pace would burn 2,070 calories.
