How Many Calories During Tennis?

Tennis is a sport played around the world and is an effective way to burn off some calories. The amount of calories burned depends on many factors including your weight, the intensity at which you play and the length of time you play.

Calories Burned

According to the University of Maryland Medical Systems Calories Burned Calculator, if you play singles tennis for 30 minutes at an average intensity and weigh 200 pounds, you will burn 266 calories. If you play for an hour, you will burn 533 calories. If you weigh 150 pounds and play for 30 minutes, you will burn 200 calories.

Considerations

The more you weigh, the more calories you will burn. The more intensely you play, the more calories you will burn and/or the longer you play, the more calories you will burn. If you play doubles tennis, having less court area to cover, you will burn less calories.

Fun Fact

The American Council on Exercise announced that a study done by the University of Wisconsin found that 159 calories were burned while playing 30 minutes of tennis on the Nintendo Wii. Playing tennis on the Wii burned less calories than playing the real thing, but more that just sitting on the couch.
