Arthritis is a painful condition that causes your joints to swell and can reduce your mobility, says the NHS Choices website for England's National Health Service. While there is no known cure, there are a number ways you can relieve the symptoms. One of these is dead sea minerals, which have been found to relieve certain forms of the condition, says PubMed.gov.

About Arthritis

Arthritis is a condition in which the joints and bones become inflamed, causing pain and stiffness, says the NHS Choices website. There are two main forms of arthritis, the most common of which is osteoarthritis, where the cartilage wears away and your bones to rub painfully against each other. Rheumatoid arthritis is a more serious but less common condition where your immune system attacks your joints causing them to become inflamed and painful. The joints most often affected by both conditions are the hips, knees, hands and spine.

Causes

The two forms of arthritis described above are most common in adults over 40 years of age, says the NHS Choices website. Osteoarthritis, in particular, is linked to the aging process however the exact cause is unknown. Rheumatoid arthritis is caused by a problem in your immune system that is most likely genetic.

Dead Sea Minerals

The Dead Sea has the highest salt content of any water body in the world--too high to sustain plant or animal life, hence its name, says the Steady Health website. As well as salt, the water is packed with minerals -- such as bromine, potassium, magnesium and calcium -- that are believed to be beneficial for the skin and a range of health conditions.

Benefits

According to PubMed.gov, one study showed that people suffering from rheumatoid arthritis experienced a significant improvement in their condition. Their symptoms were reduced after taking a warm bath containing dead sea salts every day for two weeks, and the benefits lasted for up to a month.

Precautions

While studies have shown that dead sea minerals can relieve the symptoms of some forms of arthritis, the results are temporary and other factors are essential in managing your condition, says the NHS Choices website. Exercise is one of the most important ways to keep your muscles strong and your joints mobile, and maintaining a healthy weight will ease pressure on your joints. Discuss all forms of treatment with your doctor to ensure they are appropriate for your specific condition.
