When you suffer from presbyopia, you have difficulty focusing on objects up close. This condition typically appears after you turn 40 and is considered a natural part of the aging process of the eye, according to the American Optometric Association. Bifocal contact lenses are one type of treatment used by optometrists to correct this disorder. Speak to your doctor about any possible warnings associated with bifocal contact lenses.

Difficulty of Use

One of the problems associated with bifocal contact lenses is that you must become accustomed to the fit of the lenses. The top half of the contact lenses is designed to correct distance vision issues while the bottom half corrects difficulty seeing up close. The eye moves with the lenses and you may have some vision issues in the beginning as you learn how to see correctly with the contacts.

Eye Irritation

You may experience some form of eye irritation if you wear bifocal contact lenses. During use, your eyes may feel dry, irritated or you may notice a stinging sensation. You can reduce your risk of side effects by following all cleaning instructions and replacing the lenses on a regular basis. Your eye doctor will let you know whether or not you are a candidate for continuous wear or whether you need to take out the contacts at bedtimes.

Keratitis

In a study conducted by Bausch & Lomb, it was found that 2.9 percent of users fit with the company's Pure Vision line of bifocal contact lenses experienced keratitis. Keratitis is an eye condition that causes inflammation that affects the cornea of the eye. Symptoms may include blurred vision, swelling, itchiness, eye discharge and sensitivity to light. Topical eye medications may be required to treat the condition and you will likely need to discontinue use of the lenses. Scarring, infection and vision are complications associated with keratitis.
