Dandruff, also known as seborrheic dermatitis, is a common skin condition, according to the Mayo Clinic. Symptoms include flaky, white or yellowish scales on the scalp and other oily areas of the body. The exact cause is unclear, however, Medline Plus states that a yeast called malessizia and an overproduction of skin oil are both contributing factors. Stress, fatigue and infrequent shampooing can also contribute to the disorder. Dandruff is considered a lifelong condition, per the Mayo Clinic, but certain treatments and home remedies can reduce flaking and prevent itching.
Step 1
Get adequate sunlight. According to Medline Plus, dandruff may improve in the summer, especially when performing outdoor activities.
Step 2
Try over-the-counter dandruff shampoos and hair treatments. Look for products that contain antifungals like ketoconazole and ciclopirox. Tar and pyrithione zinc as well as selenium sulfide and salicylic acid also work. Wash your hair daily and leave the product in your hair for at least five minutes. When your symptoms improve, cut back to up to three times per week.
Step 3
Use over-the-counter fungal creams. According to Medline Plus, products formulated for ringworm and athlete’s foot may relieve the itching and flaking associated with dandruff.
Step 4
Apply an over-the-counter topical steroid, such as hydrocortisone. The Mayo Clinic also recommends an anti-itch cream to relieve your symptoms.
Step 5
Change your shampoo. If you already use a dandruff shampoo and your symptoms have not improved or have gotten worse, your body may have gotten used to the product. The Mayo Clinic recommends incorporating another product and alternate between the two.
Step 6
Consult your physician. If the dandruff is severe or over-the-counter remedies don’t work, your physician can prescribe a medicated or antifungal shampoo, conditioner or lotion. Your doctor may also prescribe a topical steroid, such as hydrocortisone, to prevent itching.
