Chronic pancreatitis comes with uncomfortable symptoms, including upper abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, greasy stools and unintentional weight loss. The most common cause of chronic pancreatitis is heavy alcohol use. It can also result from hereditary disorders, other health conditions or certain medications. Several herbs may be helpful for chronic pancreatitis, when used as part of a personalized, well-rounded treatment plan. Note that herbs can have strong effects on the body, so before self-treating with herbs, consult with a qualified, botanically trained, health care provider for appropriate diagnosis and advice on herbal combinations, forms, dosage and safety.

Chamomile

Chamomile, also known by its Latin name Matricaria recutita, is an Aster family plant with white flowers. Chamomile tea is a popular remedy for calming the nerves and soothing digestive ailments. Chamomile can be useful for a variety of digestive problems, such as indigestion, flatulence, stomach ulcers and inflammatory bowel disease. Chamomile may also be helpful for chronic pancreatitis. Dr. Eric Yarnell, a naturopathic physician and author of "Naturopathic Gastroenterology," recommends taking German chamomile as tea for several months to help decrease inflammation and promote healing. The chamomile plant's active constituents are volatile oil and flavonoids, which contribute to its anti-inflammatory and digestion-easing capabilities.

Oregon Grape

Oregon grape is also known by the Latin names Mahonia and Berberis. The bitter-tasting root and stem bark are used medicinally for a wide variety of purposes, including infections, respiratory conditions, urinary complaints and skin problems. Oregon grape's actions on the body are anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial and antioxidant. Oregon grape is also classified by herbalists as a bitter, meaning it stimulates digestion by increasing digestive secretions from the pancreas, liver and gallbladder. The pancreas is an important organ for digestion, because it secretes enzymes that help digest food and hormones that are essential for blood sugar control. With chronic pancreatitis, these functions are compromised. Bitters, such as Oregon grape, can help the body to optimize digestion. Oregon grape may be taken as a tea, liquid extract or capsule.

Fringe Tree

Fringe tree, or Chionanthus virginica, is a member of the olive family. The inner bark is used medicinally and it has a bitter, astringent taste. Fringe tree is used mainly for digestive complaints, especially suboptimal function of the liver, gallbladder and pancreas. It works by stimulating production and flow of bile--a digestive fluid that's made in the liver and stored in the gallbladder. Fringe tree is also known as a digestive tonic, meaning it aids digestion by nourishing the tissues and restoring normal function of digestive organs. Yarnell reports that old-time herbalists have recommended fringe tree specifically for pancreatitis. Fringe tree may be prepared as a decoction or liquid extract.
