Egg whites are often touted as a healthier alternative to eating whole eggs. The National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute explains that choosing egg whites will lead to less fat intake than whole eggs.
Calories
According to the United States Department of Agriculture, egg whites contain only 15 calories. On the other hand, an egg yolk contains 60 calories.
Fats
Along with increased calories, the egg yolk is the only source of fat and cholesterol in an egg. Yolks contain 213 mg of cholesterol, 5 g of total fat, and 2 g of saturated fat. Egg whites contain no fat or cholesterol at all.
Uses
Egg whites can be used in almost any recipe that calls for a whole egg. You can substitute two egg whites for one whole egg.
