Cellulite is caused by fat making its way through the fibrous tissues and appearing underneath the skin. According to the American Academy of Dermatology it affects approximately 85 percent of women. Some people choose to have surgical options performed to treat cellulite. There are a number of non-invasive cellulite options that can help reduce the appearance of cellulite and remove it all together.
Cellulite Creams
Cellulite creams are an option for treating cellulite. They can be found over the counter in retail stores, online at specialty skin stores, at spas and in plastic surgeons' offices. There are three ingredients that have been found to aid in reducing the appearance of cellulite: retinol, aminophylline and caffeine. Retinol is a common ingredient found in wrinkle creams; it is now being used for cellulite creams. Retinol thickens the epidermis layer of the skin, which will lead to the reduction in the appearance of cellulite. Caffeine will act an in anti-inflammatory so skin appears smoother. It also acts as a fat metabolizer and burns fat in the area where it has been applied. Aminophylline has also been studied and shown to break down fat cells in the area where applied, according to CBS News.
Mesotherapy
Mesotherapy helps aid in cellulite removal by injecting homeopathic medicine into the mesoderm of the skin with 4 mm to 6 mm needles. Aminophylline is one of the medications used to break down fat in the layer where the cellulite exists. This procedure is done by a trained professional. The area is thoroughly cleaned with alcohol before the procedure. The medicines are then injected. The patient may experience a burning sensation for 20 minutes after the medicine has been injected. The patient may also have bruising, soreness and some swelling for several days after.
Endermologie
Endermologie is a non-invasive treatment for cellulite reduction. The machine used is similar to cellulite massager. It picks up the cellulite ridden areas and breaks up the pockets of fat. Breaking up this fat along with increasing circulation throughout the skin results in cellulite reduction, according to Sonya Dakar Skin Clinic.
Unipolar Radiofrequency
Unipolar radiofrequency is a non invasive method to treat cellulite. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, studies showed it had better results than low frequency lasers in treating cellulite. A radio frequency device heats the deeper skin tissue and structures, resulting in the tightening of cellulite.
Liposuction
According to the American Academy of Dermatology, liposuction should be avoided. Plastic surgeon's may claim to offer cellulite removal with liposuction, but it may actually result in more cellulite. The liposuction will remove excess fat, but at the same time will create more depressions in the skin, which will be prone to more cellulite appearing.
