The cranberry fat flush diet is for people seeking rapid weight loss and system detoxification. The diet's creator is Ann Louise Gittleman, Ph.D., a nutritionist. She introduced the diet in 2001, in the book “The Fat Flush Plan,” a “New York Times” bestseller. The author details the diet’s eating plan in her book and provides recipes in a separate cookbook. Consult a physician before you try this plan.


The fat flush plan corrects the five causes of weight gain, according to “Sunday Mirror” columnist Lynne Michelle. The diet helps your body recover from liver toxicity; false fat, which results from insufficient water and protein; too little consumption of healthy fats; excess insulin stored as fat; and stress. You can lose up to 10 lbs. during the first two weeks. Dr. Gittleman states that the fat flush increases your energy, helps you sleep restfully, speeds up your metabolism and stops mood swings.

The diet plan has three phases, with different eating plans and calorie levels. Phase 1 lasts two weeks. The goal in this phase is to detoxify your system and reduce the stress on your liver. The strategy accelerates your metabolism and forces fat from your body’s storage areas, according to Dr. Gittleman. Phase 2 gives you more food choices, and your calorie intake increases to 1,500 daily. This stage is for additional weight loss, according to your goals. Phase 3 is for weight maintenance. The objective is lifestyle modification so that you do not return to your pre-fat flush physical condition, according to Dr. Gittleman.

Fat Flush Foods

Although the diet is very low-calorie until you reach Phase 3, it allows lean proteins, including eggs. Each phase incorporates some carbohydrates. It permits unlimited vegetable servings from the allowable list and two to three fruit servings daily. The only fat in the diet, flaxseed oil, is heart-healthy and antioxidant. In addition to the cranberry water mix, you consume lemon water to aid the liver and kidney. This diet allows one cup of coffee daily, if desired. You supplement the fat flush foods and beverages with the “Long Life Cocktail” cranberry water and psyllium mixture, twice daily. Dr. Gittleman also recommends 360 to 400 mg of gamma-linolenic acid or GLA, a fat burner. The University of Maryland says that GLA helps regulate your metabolism. Your body cannot make this omega-6 essential fatty acid, so you must get it from food or supplements.

Weight Loss Potential

This reduced-calorie and low-carbohydrate diet results in rapid weight loss. Since the fat flush plan restricts your daily calorie intake, expect to drop at least 1 lb. for every 3,500 calories that you eliminate from your diet during the fat flush.


Harvard University recommends medical supervision for diets below 1,200 calories per day for women and 1,500 calories daily for men. Sticking to the food restrictions severely limits your calorie intake. Your body may react by going into starvation mode. When this happens, it hoards your stored fat and slows your metabolism, according to Rutgers University. Limited food choices can make it difficult to finish the first phase.
