Choosing the right skin care products is difficult enough, but when you have combination skin, it can be even more of a challenge. Miami dermatologist Leslie Baumann, M.D., says that people often pick the wrong products for their skin type, and this can result in improper care or worsened skin problems.
To care for oily, combination skin, choose cleansers and moisturizers designed with your skin type in mind, and use them daily to help balance and refine your complexion.
Step 1
Start controlling your skin's oil production as soon as you wake up by washing your face with a foaming cleanser. "Allure" states that this will clean your skin without drying it out or clogging your pores. Lather the product in your wet palms, smooth it over your face and then rinse off.
Step 2
Dry your face and hands and apply a 2-percent salicylic acid cream if your skin is acne-prone. "Marie Claire" states that this percentage is strong enough to combat pimples without overdrying your skin, which may cause it to make more oil. Smooth the cream over your entire face, and wait for it to absorb before you move on. Skip this step if you do not have acne.
Step 3
Apply a moisturizer that is oil-free and noncomedogenic. This will ensure that it will not clog your pores, says "Marie Claire." Choose a lightweight product that promises not to leave a greasy residue, and smooth it all over your face. If you have patches of dry or flaking skin, "Allure" suggests dabbing a thicker moisturizer on those areas only.
Step 4
Use mineral makeup if you wear foundation or concealer. According to "Marie Claire," this type of makeup is best for people with oily or combination skin, as it is noncomedogenic. Apply the makeup over any areas you want to camouflage by using your fingers or a makeup sponge, and blend it in thoroughly.
Step 5
Clean your face with the foaming cleanser at night to get rid of dirt, oil and makeup. Pat dry, and then apply a glycolic acid facial peel once a week. "Allure" says that this will help exfoliate your skin, even out your complexion and combat excess oil. Smooth the product over your face and allow it to dry before washing it off. Dry your skin and reapply the salicylic acid cream if needed.
