Yoga is a discipline that assists in lengthening and strengthening muscle. But one form of yoga in particular, namely Ashtanga or Power Yoga, can also burn a significant amount of calories.

History

Renowned yogi Sri K. Pattabhi Jois developed the modern version of Ashtanga yoga. It is characterized by a vigorous, flowing series of postures accompanied by intricate breath work.

The Practice

The practice is comprised of three series of increasingly difficult postures. The Primary series begins with a Salute to the Sun and progressing through a variety of 70 to 75 strengthening and balancing postures, an Ashtanga class takes 90 minutes to complete.

Calories

The amount of energy expended in any form of activity is dependent upon such factors as: age, fitness level, and weight. A 140 lb person can expect to burn 670 calories in a 90 minute Ashtanga class. Comparatively, that same person would burn 600 calories during an hour and half of aerobic dancing or 420 for Tai Chi.

Benefits

Ashtanga yoga is a demanding practice that will elevate your fitness level considerably. If your intent is to become stronger or more disciplined in mind and body, then Ashtanga yoga will give you that opportunity.
