The Side Effects of MSM Vitamin Supplements

If you suffer from chronic joint pain and inflammation due to osteoarthritis, you may benefit from treatment with MSM supplements. MSM, also known as methylsulfonylmethane, is a sulfur-containing supplement available over-the-counter that may help reduce joint discomfort. Talk with your doctor about the side effects of MSM supplements before using this natural treatment.

Fatigue

You may feel unusually fatigued while taking MSM supplements, the University of Michigan Health System reports. Increased fatigue may affect your ability to complete normal tasks associated with your daily work or home activities.

Stomach Discomfort

MSM supplements may irritate your stomach or digestive tract. Stomach discomfort may result in nausea or bowel movement changes, such as diarrhea or constipation, AARP reports. Diarrhea or constipation may occur in conjunction with abdominal bloating or cramping. Seek care from your doctor if you develop severe or persistent diarrhea.

Headache

Headache pain may develop as a side effect of MSM supplements. If you develop headache discomfort, you may find it difficult to focus or concentrate during your daily activities. Treatment with an over-the-counter pain medication, such as acetaminophen, may help reduce your headache pain.

Skin Rash

While taking MSM supplements, you may develop a skin rash as a side effect of treatment, the University of Michigan Health System explains. You may notice that your skin appears unusually red or begins to itch. If such side effects persist or become severe, consult a medical professional.

Allergic Reaction

Infrequently, an allergic reaction may occur in people taking MSM supplements, AARP warns. Seek prompt medical care if you develop allergic reaction side effects such as hives, breathing difficulties or oral swelling.
